Welcome to the web site for Rising Sun Earthworks.
Rising Sun Earthworks stoneware is displayed and sold at juried craft shows in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
All of my pottery is made by hand- no presses or slip casting here! It’s handbuilt, or thrown on a wheel. Properly thrown and fired pottery is much stronger than cast pottery.
There are many steps I must go through to create the finished product- from wedging the wet clay to a final wet sanding of the foot- taking many patient days of drying and firing, and hours of work forming and glazing the pieces.
Please enjoy using your pottery every day and make it a part of your life!
This is what I truly enjoy- making things that people can love and use every day over a lifetime or more. My pieces are durable, simple, and meant to be used every day, thrown in the dishwasher or microwave, and baked in the oven. They can last forever with a few simple precautions:
- Don’t put cold pottery in a hot oven. Place the pottery in the oven, then preheat.
- Don’t cook with it on top of the stove, or under the broiler.
- And, obviously- don’t strike pottery pieces against each other or on hard surfaces. What can sometimes happen in the last instance is the pottery will develop a hairline crack, allowing moisture to seep in. The next time it is microwaved, steam develops and cracks the piece. With normal use, this rarely happens. I use my pottery in the microwave almost every day and have only had one piece break, because it had been damaged before.
I have found that my glazed stoneware has an almost non-stick surface! With a short soak or swish with a soapy scrub pad, baked on food comes right off. In my kitchen though, if it fits, it goes in the dishwasher.
